Family & Civil Law — your questions, answered.
How long does a divorce take in Bangladesh?+
Under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961, a talaq becomes effective 90 days after notice to the Arbitration Council. Contested court proceedings for custody, dower or maintenance typically take 6–18 months.
Can a mother get custody of a child in Bangladesh?+
Yes — under Muslim personal law, a mother is generally entitled to custody (hizanat) of a young child, subject to the child's welfare, which the Family Court treats as the paramount consideration.
How is inheritance divided in Bangladesh?+
Distribution depends on the deceased's religion. We prepare heirship certificates, distribute shares under the relevant personal law and file partition suits where co-heirs cannot agree.
